Travel & Accommodation

Arriving by Air

Brussels National Airport (Brussel-Nationaal-Luchthaven / Bruxelles-National-Aéroport) is located in Zaventem, about 15 km from the city centre. From the train station below the terminal, up to two direct trains leave every hour to Ghent St-Pieters station (Gent-Sint-Pieters / Gand-Saint-Pierre) and the journey takes about one hour. More trains are available changing at Brussels South station (Brussels-Midi / Brussel-Zuid). For up to date timetables, online ticket purchases and life updates, please refer to the Belgian Rail website.

Brussels South Airport (Charleroi Airport) is located in Gosseliers, on the outskirts of Charleroi, about 60 km from central Brussels. You can buy the 'Charleroi Airport Ticket' from one of the ticket machines outside the terminal or online. The ticket includes the TEC bus journey from the airport to Charleroi-South station, and the train from there to Ghent Saint-Pieters, changing at Brussels South. However, it is probably faster to travel from Charleroi Airport to Ghent by bus, either taking the Flibco Shuttle directly to Ghent Saint-Peters, or the more frequent Brussels City Shuttle to Brussels South train station (exit Rue de France) and then the train from there to Ghent Saint-Peters. A shared mini-bus from Charleroi Airport to Brussels South train station (exit Rue de France) may offer a valid alternative to the bus at an equivalent price.

Arriving by Train

Ghent is served by two train stations, Ghent Sint-Pieters and Ghent Dampoort, that allow direct connections to national and international lines. Indicatively, the traveling time from Leuven to Ghent is one hour, 1h 8min from Brussels, 1h 15min from Lille, 1h 20min from Brugge , 1h 35min from Antwerp or Ostend, 2h 40min from London (by Eurostar), 4h 25min from Amsterdam and four and a half hours from Paris (by Thalys).

At your arrival, taxi services are readily available in front of both stations, which you may also book in advance. The city centre and the conference are well connected by buses and trams.

From Ghent St-Peters station
Take tram 1 (perron 1, direction Wondelgem/Evergem) and get off at Korte Meer.

From Ghent Dampoort
Take bus 3 (perron 1, direction Mariakerke Post), 17 (perron 3, direction Drongen), 18 (perron 3, direction Drongen Luchteren / Merendree), 38 (perron 1, direction Gent Blaarmeersen) or 39 (perron 1, direction Gent Blaarmeersen) to the city centre and get off at Korenmarkt.

Single tickets can be purchased on board (small cash only) or from ticket machines at many bus stops (no credit cards), but they are more conveniently bought from the De Lijn ticket office outside Ghent St Peters or any other advance sales points near-by. The Lijn card might be the best option for your stay. You can buy it at train stations in Brussels or Ghent and is valid everywhere in Flanders.

The walk from Ghent Sint-Pieters to the Orpheus Institute is about 2,2 km (25 min) and from Ghent Dampoort is about 1,7 km (20 min). This free city map (PDF, 560KB) can be downloaded and stored on your mobile devices for offline use.

Arriving by Car
